Bokaro : In a major breakthrough for security forces combating left-wing extremism, a senior female member of the CPI (Maoist) surrendered before police officials in Bokaro on Monday. This development follows the success of “Operation Dakabera” a coordinated anti-Naxal offensive conducted on April 21, 2025, in the Lugu Pahar region of Bokaro district.

The operation, launched under the directives of the Director General of Police, Jharkhand, involved joint forces of the 209 CoBRA Battalion, Bokaro Police, Jharkhand Jaguar, and the CRPF. It resulted in the killing of eight Maoists, including Prayag Manjhi alias Vivek, a member of the Central Committee of the CPI (Maoist). Security forces also seized a large cache of arms, ammunition, and other essential supplies during the operation.

During the fierce encounter, Sunita Murmu alias Lilmuni Murmu, a female cadre of the Maoist organization, managed to escape. However, influenced by the Jharkhand government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy and the decimation of her leadership, 22-year-old Sunita voluntarily surrendered before senior police officials at the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Bokaro on April 28.

A resident of Amarpani village under Shikaripara police station limits in Dumka district, Sunita has a criminal history and had previously spent three years in judicial custody at Giridih Jail. She faces multiple serious charges under the Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) registered at Mahuatand and Khukhra police stations.

Speaking to the media post-surrender, Sunita revealed that she was lured into joining the Maoist ranks under false pretenses. “They took me from my home under the pretext of attending court proceedings but led me into the hills instead. It was only then that I realized I had been misled onto a wrong path,” she recounted.

Sunita further disclosed that she was part of the Lugu Pahar squad and, after surviving the encounter, wandered through forests before managing to reach a train station and ultimately the Bokaro SP’s office to surrender.

When asked about her experience among the Maoists, Sunita said she immediately sensed upon joining that it was a mistake. Police authorities have hailed her surrender as a significant achievement in the ongoing campaign against Naxalism.
