Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the Bishop of Rome, passed away on Easter Monday at 7:35 AM. The news of his death has cast a shadow of grief over the global Catholic community of 1.4 billion followers. The Vatican has declared a nine-day mourning period to honor his memory and spiritual legacy.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. He was the first pope from Latin America, the first Jesuit pope, and the first non-European leader of the Church in over 1,200 years.

Pope Francis assumed the papacy following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Known for his humility, progressive approach, and commitment to the poor and marginalized, Pope Francis sought to reform the often rigid and traditionalist Catholic institution. His tenure, however, was also marked by internal divisions and challenges, as he tried to steer the Church toward greater inclusivity and transparency.

The Pope had been battling multiple health issues in recent years. Decades ago, he had one of his lungs partially removed due to a severe infection, a condition that continued to affect his respiratory health throughout his life. In 2023, he was hospitalized due to a lung infection, and more recently, he spent nearly a month in the hospital before being discharged on March 24, 2025, and returning to his residence at Casa Santa Marta. Upon his return, he had offered blessings to the faithful who had gathered outside the hospital.

In a statement released by the Vatican, Cardinal Kevin Farrell said, “Dear brothers and sisters, it is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Pope Francis. This morning at 7:35 AM, the Bishop of Rome returned to the Lord. His entire life was dedicated to the service of God and His Church. He taught us to live the Gospel values with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poor and marginalized.”
