Maithon (Dhanbad) : Once again, tension flared at the Maithon reservoir project site on Friday when a group of around 40 to 50 individuals gathered and obstructed the ongoing work related to the introduction of adventure sports by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC).
According to sources, the agitators, led by Mr. Qureshi, a JMM Zila Parishad member, along with several local residents from Gogna village and local boatmen, issued threats to the workmen and warned them against carrying out any further activities at the site.
Upon receiving information about the disturbance, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the local police station rushed to the spot. However, despite the police presence, the mob continued to behave aggressively and even threatened to set fire to the equipment, escalating the tension further.
The incident has created a serious sense of insecurity among the workforce and the contractor’s personnel engaged in the project. Sources said that despite repeated assurances from the authorities, the implementing agency has expressed strong apprehension about resuming the water project activities under the prevailing circumstances.
Local sources added that the agitation stems from opposition among certain local groups who fear the project might affect their existing livelihoods linked to boating and related activities at the reservoir.
Police officials said the situation is being closely monitored, and efforts are underway to restore normalcy and ensure safety at the site.
