Bokaro: Leading steel manufacturer Vedanta ESL organized a large-scale sapling distribution drive on Thursday in the villages surrounding its plant. As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and community development, the company distributed over 4,000 fruit-bearing saplings to local residents in CSR-focused villages.

The initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Environment Department, provided technical expertise and guidance. The distributed saplings included five varieties of fruit-bearing trees—mango, banana, guava, gooseberry, and jackfruit—selected for their adaptability to the local climate, high nutritional value, and economic benefits.

The campaign aimed to promote afforestation, enhance air quality, and boost biodiversity in the region. Additionally, it sought to provide a sustainable source of nutrition and potential livelihood opportunities for the villagers, contributing to their overall well-being and economic stability.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, community leaders, factory employees, and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).

Kunal Daripa, CSR Head at Vedanta ESL, stated, “Our mission goes beyond steel production. We are deeply committed to making a positive impact on the environment and the communities we work in. Vedanta is dedicated to fostering a culture of sustainability and community welfare. This sapling distribution drive is a small yet meaningful step toward creating a greener future for generations to come. We are grateful for the opportunity to be part of such impactful programs and remain committed to nurturing these trees for the benefit of future generations.”

Jitun Ansari, the Mukhiya of Chandaha, lauded the initiative, saying, “This sapling distribution drive is an amazing effort by the CSR team. Distributing fruit-bearing trees like mango and guava means we will soon have fruits to eat, and any surplus can be sold. This is a thoughtful way to improve our lives while protecting nature.”

Shital Singh, the Mukhiya of Purvi Mohal, added, “This initiative is part of Vedanta ESL’s broader CSR efforts, focused on promoting environmental sustainability, community development, and social welfare in its operational areas. Planting fruit-bearing trees contributes to carbon absorption, improves soil health, and supports local biodiversity, aligning with global sustainability goals. These trees also provide a reliable source of fresh fruits, enhancing dietary diversity and reducing food insecurity. Moreover, the surplus fruits can be sold in local markets, generating economic opportunities and additional income for families. By involving the community in the care and maintenance of these trees, the initiative fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, encouraging sustainable practices and conservation efforts.”
